High-Res Imaging @11.7T: 4-Element Phased Array vs. 2-Element CryoProbe

Cryogenically cooled resonators (CCRs) are a recent addition to small animal imaging applications. CCR use has provided substantial gains in SNR, making them a valuable tool even for high-field small animal MRI. This study investigates their potential for imaging at 500MHz, in particular testing high-resolution brain imaging and functional cardiac imaging. CCR application has shown that scan time can be reduced by 75% without sacrificing image fidelity, or that the spatial resolution can be ... Continue reading

Characterizing Drug Efficacy with Desktop MRI

Fifteen Morris hepatoma-bearing rats were treated using two differing regimes, and the therapeutic results for both were monitored using the Icon desktop MRI scanner. A group of 6 animals was treated with Sorafenib, a multikinase inhibitor blocking tumor cell proliferation and angiogenesis whereas a second group of rats (n=6) was administered with Entinostat –MS-275- a benzoamide with activity against HDAC of class 1 and 2. The choice of these two compounds was supported by evidence in literature ... Continue reading

Functional Connectivity MRI of the Rat Brain

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the brain’s “resting state” (rsfMRI), and its measurement of functional connectivity, has gained significant attention over the last 15 years. It is believed that low-frequency fluctuations observed in the BOLD signal reflect spontaneous neural activity, and that synchronized fluctuations in distinct brain regions thus point to a functional connection between them (Fig. 1). First demonstrated for the human motorcortex (Biswal et al., 1995), numerous ... Continue reading
